Text Paks on the Phone

November 2, 2009

By Carol Politi

We offer a variety of ways to purchase Text Paks – including the option to purchase these on the handset itself.  Because we assume that a child is the user of the handset, it is only possible to make one time (i.e., non-recurring) Text Pak purchases from a kajeet handset.

There are three options for one-time Text Pak purchases available on the handset:

1.  200 texts for $4.99

2.  1,000 texts for $9.99

3.  Unlimited texts for $19.99.

This ability to fund these one-time Text Paks from the wallet allows you to provide an allowance in your son or daughter’s kajeet wallet and let them decide how they want to spend it – talking, texting, playing games, etc.  (Note that your calls will always go through – even if they run out of their allowance – if you fund your Parent Wallet).

The handset purchase options are especially ideal if your son or daughter may not be purchasing a Pak every month.  For example, if they know they will text more over a holiday when they are not with their friends or if they want the ability to spend their phone allowance on texts one month and games the next.

Are you or your child using the handset purchase option?   Please let us know what other tools you would like to see on the handset.

i would like to see an unlimited mutimedia (picture, audio, and ringtones) messaging pak and add it to the unlimited talk & text pak.

Thanks for your feedback. We know a number of other carriers include other messaging types in their messaging paks. However, when we have queried parents, most appear to prioritize issues related to safety of the service and monthly price/value of the service. A number of parents are very concerned with picture messaging and either limit this or shut it off entirely. We have therefore decided to keep our unlimited voice and text paks as text only and offer the service at a lower price than we could if we included other messaging types. This ensure we do not tax parents that would like to hold off on introducing picture messaging for their kids, and lets those that are interested in other kinds of messaging access these for a reasonable price.

Ok, I can see your point there.

    Thank You

hi , i would really love to see picture messaging included with any text pack i think this would bring in new teens and kids when piture messaging is included.

Isn’t that part of the parental control? I know I was able to turn that feature on or off……

  6. Cathay Murry Says:

Oh yeah and why don’t the minutes role over?

  7. Carol Politi Says:

Yes, you can control text. There are three ways to do this:

    1. Through the Contact Manager. Any numbers you block or otherwise control will have limitations applied to voice, text, and picture messaging

    2. Through the TimeManager. Any time blocks will prevent text and pictures during these periods.

    3. By calling Care. 1-866-452-5338. They can turn off text entirely. (Note that you can turn off picture messaging and control other optional features from the kajeet.com parental controls dashboard.

To make the minutes roll over, we will have to increase prices. Rather than do this, we have decided to have very economical plans and make it very low cost to add minutes. If you want to economize, buy a plan that is at or under what you need. Minutes above your plan are only $.10!

Rollover plans have higher $$ cost/minute – and they often have overage charges which push you to purchase a larger bundle of minutes (to avoid penalties when you go over). Why buy more than you need?

Hi, I am used to being able to text cell phone users from my laptop, and wondered if I could text a kajeet user this way? E.g. verizon allows you to text any user using their phone number + vtext.com … is this possible with kajeet? Thanks a ton!

  10. Carol Politi Says:

Yes – you can text kajeet customers directly from kajeet.com. Just go here:

    Thanks a ton!

OK, the web interface works — thanks — but it would be wonderful if you could enable direct emailing. Right now, you can’t reply to a Kajeet user’s text, the email bounces, so it’s difficult to hold a conversation this way. Perhaps you could enable direct email-to-text sometime in the future — that would be great!

  13. Carol Politi Says:

    Hi Blake,

You can email as well. Send your email to the following address (but make sure to format as a text format – not HTML):

    mobilenumber@mobile.kajeet.net

There is typically an option when you are composing a message that allows you to select “plain text”, “rich text”, or “html”. The default is often HTML. When sending a text to a kajeet user phone, select “plain text”.

(It is clear we need a full page on this that is easy for our customers to find. I’ll feed back to product on this topic.)
