Upgrading Your Kajeet Phone?

A number of our customers are taking advantage of our new phone selection (and the holiday gifting season) to upgrade their child’s phone (or their own!).   We made this process much easier recently by launching the ability to switch your phone from our website.    This post describes how this is done.

If you are an existing customer and you purchase a new kajeet phone, you can move your number to it (i.e., “switch your phone”) online as follows:

1.  Login to kajeet.com (www.kajeet.com)

2.  Select “switch a phone” from your logged in home page as shown below.

You will then be asked to select the phone you would like to upgrade (in the event you have multiple phones on the account) and for the ESN or MEID of your new phone (this is a unique number that physically identifies a phone – we show you how to find this!).

We know each kajeet customer that purchases a new kajeet phone is making a decision to keep kajeet as their service provider.  We appreciate your business.  I hope our new online phone upgrade feature makes the process of upgrading your phone easier.

    When do you usually get new models of phones for kajeet? I have been looking at your website lately and I think most kids are into texting more than talking with there phones. And not that the original Rumor and the Rumor2 are not good choices. It’s just that I think you need more of a variety of phones for kids to choose from. Like maybe the Samsung Exclaim, or the SANYO Incognito or even the LG lotus. These are great texting phones for kids with a full qwerty boards that give kids more of a choice that they can choose from. Please write back about what you think.

    Hi Marisa,

    Our most recently launches were the Sanyo 2700 (very popular) and the Rumor2. Both of these have been introduced in the past few months/weeks.

    The biggest driver on our stock mix is the ability to keep phones at a price point that parents and kids will be able to afford. Our is a pay as you go service which means there are no annual contracts (and no termination fees!). Contract plans with hefty termination fees “buy down” the price of the phone to offer expensive phones at a low starting price, but tack on lots of hidden fees, overages, and large termination penalties that can result in terrible surprises for parents.

    In general, we always keep stock in devices that are $25 or less because many families want an inexpensive phone for safety reasons. These devices are typically flip phones. We can provide Qwerty keyboard phones for as little as $129 today. As with any technology product, devices with new features like touch screens take just a bit of time to get past the early adopter stage and to the mainstream, typically value-conscious, market. We pick up those products when they reach the point that a reasonable number of parents would be willing to pay for them. This means we typically work to keep the devices we sell to those we can make available for less than $200 (while not requiring any annual contract).

    I used the upgrade webpage last night (Christmas Eve) and it was easy enough, only problem is now there is no service on the old phone and the new phone hasn’t kicked in yet. (18 hours later). I assume it’s because it’s Christmas and we have to wait for someone to “push a button” or something? Hopefully by tomorrow we will have service?

    There should be no delay in an upgrade (i.e., when you switch from one kajeet phone to a new kajeet phone). If the handset is not working, please contact care to check into the upgrade. Today will be our busiest day in the year in customer care. If you would like to have them reach out to you, please email the affected phone number to care at care@kajeet.com and they can reach out to you with more information.

    My son took me directly to the page of the phone he wanted and I purchaced it before I found out about the program that allowed me to upgrade his existing phone. Is it possible to use this program after we receive his phone or will we experience penalties or have to change his number?

    so if my daughter has a kajeet phone already,does she still have to buy a new phone or does she just get the phone and turns in her old phone to pay the difference.

    Hi Ashley,

    Thanks for being a kajeet customer. We don’t tie our customers to a contact. This means you can keep the kajeet phone for as long as you like and you may upgrade at any time. It also means you can take advantage of any deal on our site to upgrade – but there is no “pay the difference” type arrangement.

    Hey I’m really like the kajeet service but I’m thinking on switching to someone else. the only reason in the phones. are you getting any new ones in except the new Sanyo though.

    We will post on new phones here as soon as some become available! The LG Rumor 2 is a great handset – take a close look at that one as we hear great things from the customers we have using it. Having said this, there are good things on the handset roadmap for this year as well so stay tuned!

    I recently upgraded my phone through my service provider and now I have my old phone that is not being used. Can I give my old phone to my son who has the Kajeet service and move his service to it?

    Hi Kim,

    If your old phone is a kajeet phone you can do this. If it is not a kajeet phone, it will be locked to the network from your old service provider, so we will not be able to activate it on th ekajeet service.

    Carol: Amazon is carrying the pink kajeet Sanyo 2700 for $119 (it says it is a ‘prepaid’ phone). That’s nearly $30 less than what is showing on the kajeet website. If purchased through Amazon does this phone qualify as an upgraded kajeet phone with the same service plan we have now (we have an unlimited text/160 (I think) minute call package)? On the Amazon site it says with selection of plan but we already are on a plan. It doesn’t seem reasonable to pay another $30 for the same phone and a plan that we already have. Thanks!

    You can purchase a new kajeet phone at Amazon or at the kajeet.com store and the phones will be exactly the same. The sales and promotions vary from store to store – so please feel free to shop around & thanks for upgrading with kajeet!

    Id like to see some better phones.
    It seemes like it has some amazing prices for plans but the draw back is the type of phones you have. Can you get some touch sreen or smart phones at least? I think more people will choose Kajeet if you get better phones.

    We’re always looking for new handsets to add to our lineup of phones – and that includes new Qwerty models, as well as those with touch screens. Getting touch screen handsets is something we’re working on, but we want to be sure when we offer them, we can do so at a price point that both parents and kids will be able to afford (as you pointed out, our plan prices are already great!). Keep checking back, as our selection changes often!

    for starters im actually wondering if kajeet is actually sprint or not?? next i was wondering, i was just given an almost brand new samsung exclaim.i was hoping that i could use that for my kajeet phone??is there a way to just transfer the service onto it??

    Thanks for your question! Kajeet wireless network services are provided on the Nationwide Sprint Network. You can check your coverage area by visiting our website. Unfortunately, you would not be able to activate your Samsung Exclaim on kajeet. Only phones purchased from kajeet can be activated on kajeet (and check the site often, as we are always adding new handsets!). Sorry about that!

    This feature does not exist on the site. It now says you have to call customer service during business hours. Frustrating.

    Earlier this year, we made some changes to the logged-in view of our website. And when those were implemented, the “Switch a Phone” option, as described in this post, did move. The good news is, though, you can still upgrade your phone online. Just log into your account, go to your Account Summary page and scroll down. There’s a tab labeled “Add a Phone.” Click on this tab and you can activate a new phone, replace or upgrade an existing phone or purchase a new phone. Thanks for pointing this out – we’ll make sure it’s clearer from now on.

    can i switch my old phone (sprint) to kajeet willl it be any cost or fees ? can i switch an iphone 4 from sprint to kajeet

    Hi Sydney – Thanks for your question! You can transfer your phone number from another service to kajeet. But you cannot activate a phone from another carrier on kajeet. Phones from other carriers are typically locked and we cannot activate a non-kajeet phone on kajeet. Hope that helps!

  27. With the new bring your own sprint device deal my friend has an sprint iphone 4s he will give to me once he gets his upgrade. is that one of the models that will work? Also could I buy a unlocked iphone from amazon or ebay and activate it on Kajeet?
