kajeet – the cell phone service made for kids

The Money Issue

April 9, 2010

kajeet the cell phone service for kids

We take great pride at kajeet in having created the best, safest cell phone service for kids™. Normally, we point out that we have free, unlimited parental controls and monitoring, kid-appropriate content, 4 awards from parent organizations, our GPS Phone Locator service…that sort of thing.

But we’ve kept some other things in mind, too. The high cost of living. The high cost of cell phones. The high cost of having kids (I have 2).

The average cost of a contract-based cell phone service in the U.S. is more than $56.00/month. And data-intensive smartphones cost significantly more. That so-called extra “family plan” line you’re considering adding? Analysis done by iGR Research found that the average cost of a “family plan” line is over $44.00/month, and the additional cost of an extra line for a child is over $35.00/month when all costs are considered.

Oh, and with that “family plan,” you can’t turn off the bills when your child goes to camp for the summer… (yes, you can do that with a contract-free kajeet phone).

But money is tight.  And the strain on American household budgets is why many people are turning to prepaid (or “contract-free”) cell phone services. You can find an article from ABC News about that trend here.

We’ve been hearing from parents about the need to spend less on cell phones for their children for a long time.  So here’s how we’ve responded. Kajeet offers contract-free plans that have:

  • No contract
  • No activation fee
  • No termination fee
  • FREE unlimited parental controls and monitoring capability (I know, I already said that)

Allow me to crow a bit about my favorite kajeet contract-free plan: $14.99/month for unlimited text and 60 minutes of voice. This is what I bought for each of my own 2 kids (I also subscribe to our GPS Phone Locator for $9.99/month, but that’s optional).

Here’s what I get: affordable service, no surprises and very happy kids.

So long as I have the ability to keep them from texting at school and during bedtime (using my FREE parental controls!), they can text to their heart’s content. That’s what kids do. The 60 minutes of talk are more than enough for the few phone calls they make to tell me they’re ready to get picked up and for me to call and check in.  They just don’t talk much. They text. And guess who texts a lot more now? Yup – Mr. Old School.

That $14.99/month plan strikes me as a pretty sweet deal. How sweet?  It’s a savings of $240 per year per kid over that so-called “family plan” add-a-line.

Oh, and did I mention that we are keeping the phone costs down by offering refurbished phones that look and work great? Check out our selection of cell phones here.

And for those parents who just want to have a safety phone in their child’s backpack?  We have a $4.99/month plan. You can see our other no-contract plans here.

Finally – lest you wonder about our coverage and network reliability – kajeet uses the terrific Sprint National Digital Network.

Thanks.

kajeet – the cell phone service made for kids

The Kaiser Family Foundation recently released a study that reviewed kid’s media use – excluding cell phone texting and talking – and found that kids 8-18 are using media an average of 7 hours and 38 minutes a day.  The study found that texting adds another 1 hour and 35 minutes per day.  The study also found that high media use is correlated with lower personal satisfaction and lower grades. Parents are rightly concerned.

A major challenge in the world of cell phones has been bearing down on us for several years. And now it’s here. Extremely powerful mobile devices – small computers, really – are now in the hands of our children for large parts of the day, creating all kinds of questions, problems and conflicts. With two ‘mobile kids’ of my own, I live with the challenge of making sure my children make the best possible use of their powerful mobile devices – and avoid the pitfalls.

As a parent, I do not believe that ‘every child has to have a cell phone.’ Though I know that virtually every child wants one, the decision is a child’s parents to make. Still, the Kaiser Family Foundation study finds that 66% of 8 – 18 year olds now have cell phones. And the number is steadily growing. It’s our view that, within 5 years, nearly every child above the age of 10 (and probably younger), will carry around what we’d today call a Smartphone.

Parents are getting their children cell phones for safety, to improve family logistics, to help their kids connect with friends, and to keep the family in closer touch. (My kids and I love texting each other when I’m traveling for work.) All good reasons. And soon, cell phones will be integrated into more school activities and processes.

Yet, despite the benefits, parents want to find ways to make sure cell phone use doesn’t distract their kids from school, homework, and sleep. And they want to shield their children from dangers such as sexting; texting while driving; being harassed, tracked or worse by strangers; and bullying, much of which is now conducted online or via cell phone. (I was just at my daughter’s middle school orientation last week, and this was the most talked-about topic.)

At kajeet, seeing that cell phones were in the cards for most kids, we set out to be part of the solution. From our earliest beginnings, we’ve thought about our service as a kind of “kitchen table,” a place where parents and their children can negotiate the right boundaries and limits, which, as we know, change with time and circumstances. By building kajeet with a powerful suite of monitoring, alert, control and budgeting features, we’ve put the power of managing the challenges, risks and potential dangers directly in the hands of families.

Now, without even signing up to a contract (parents insisted on that point), families can manage their kids’ service via the easy-to-use kajeet parental controls. Just by logging in to our Web site, parents can ensure that the talk they had with their child is put into practice: who they can text and call, when, what features of their phone they can use, who pays for what. Plus, parents can monitor the phone’s activity, track their child’s phone, and even get alerts telling them where the phone is at set times. (For example, I get e-mail alerts each morning that tell me whether my kids have arrived at school, and, in the afternoon, telling me whether or not they’ve made it home. That works for me.)

But the actual conversation between parent and child is really the most important thing. Our technology supports and implements what comes from that conversation. So, we asked ourselves how we might contribute more to those conversations, beyond simply providing affordable and easy-to-use technology to manage and monitor your child’s cell phone.

After talking with many kajeet families, we have come up with a set of guidelines that families can review before giving their child a cell phone in order to avoid the common pitfalls many families encounter:

  1. Establish a contract covering the rules of use before giving your child his or her first cell phone. Cover “who, where, and how much” cell phone use is appropriate.    (Here’s a sample contract you can tailor to meet your own family’s needs.)
  2. Agree to put the cell phone in a central recharging area at night, in a powered down condition. (And, to be green, unplug the charger when it’s not in use.
  3. Discuss and reach agreement on appropriate cell phone etiquette (including use of phones during meals, at restaurants, and in public areas)
  4. Discuss the appropriate use of picture messaging and the hazards of inappropriate use. (Yes, we’re talking about sexting here.)
  5. Get an iron-clad commitment that the phone will not be used when driving. Discuss what your child should do if in a car with a driver who is texting.
  6. Review the rules of cell phones at school, and reach agreement that all school rules regarding cell phone use will be followed.
  7. Establish a budget and identify who will pay for use of the cell phone.
  8. Review the consequences if the agreed-upon rules of use are broken.

Many kajeet parents find it useful to periodically review the detailed account activity with their child to make sure that the phone is being used appropriately.

This may seem like good ol’ common sense. Good. But we parents are busy people, and it’s important to find the small amount of time it takes to set the ground rules for kids’ use of cell phones. That’s just as important as experiencing the excitement of giving the phone as a gift, or sending your child off to school or camp.

At kajeet, we’ve committed ourselves to helping families have better conversations, better tools to control that small computer their kids are toting, and a simple dashboard that allows for effective monitoring of their child’s communications.

But regardless of who you’ve chosen to be your child’s cell phone provider, outlining the rules and establishing a contract for use of this mobile computer can help families ensure the phone is a tool that keeps their child safe and teaches them responsibility.

YouTube Safety Mode

February 17, 2010

by Carol Politi

YouTube has introduced a Safety Mode that filters “objectionable content” prior to display on your browser.  This setting will ensure that content that does not meet YouTube Community Guidelines (e.g., content that includes nudity, graphic violence, animal abuse, narcotics), and comments that include such content, are blocked.

You can turn Safety Mode ON by scrolling to the bottom of the YouTube page and clicking on the Safety Mode link.  This will bring up a menu that allows you to turn Safety Mode On or Off.   If you are logged into Google or YouTube you will also see an option in that same spot on the page that allows you to lock this setting in place for the browser you are using.  See the YouTube Safety Mode video for more information on how to configure this setting.

Safety Mode is similar to the Safe Search mode you might be familiar with using on the Google Web and Image Search pages.    Note that you must set this up for each browser – so if you use Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, etc. on the same machine – you must set this up separately for each instance of each browser in order for it to be effective.

There are ways around this:  the configuration is cookie based, your child can download a new browser (these are free and it is easy to do), etc.  While not perfect, it is a giant step in the right direction and an important setting for parents with kids that love YouTube.

Have you tried Safety Mode?  How is it working for you?  Comment here and let us know.

kajeet – the cell phone service made for kids

by Carol Politi

If you got someone a kajeet phone for Christmas, or if you received one, the first thing you need to do is to activate your phone.  You can do this entirely online!

Both new kajeet customers activating a new kajeet phone and existing customers that are “swapping” or swapping or upgrading to a new kajeet phone can do this online.

What is “activation”?

Prior to use, each kajeet account needs to be set up with parent (or guardian) information and assigned a phone number.  Once you activate you will automatically be enrolled in the rate plan you chose when the phone was purchased.  If you did not select a rate plan at the time of purchase, simply login kajeet.com from your PC and select a plan.

What is the best way to activate my phone?

Online activation is your best option.  New customers can activate online here at kajeet.com.   Existing kajeet customers that have purchased a new phone and want to upgrade to it (and keep their phone number) can login to kajeet.com and upgrade their phone (see my recent blog post describing how to do this).

What if I am moving/porting my existing number to kajeet?

You will need to contact kajeet customer care if you are porting (moving) a number from another cell phone service provider to kajeet.  Have a copy of your bill and/or account login information with you when you contact kajeet customer care. While we are working to make this process as fast as possible, it can take up to 3-4 days to port a number.  (We are dependent upon other telecommunications companies and they are all busy at this time of year).

How can you reach care and what are the kajeet Holiday Care Hours?

Our care department can be reached at 1-866-452-5338 or care@kajeet.com.  kajeet Customer Care is closed on Christmas Day to give our hardworking care personnel from Canton, Ohio the day off with their families.

Our Holiday Care Hours are as follows

  • December 21st – Dec. 24th: 9:00am – 10:00pm
  • Christmas (December 25th) – Closed
  • December 26th – 8:00am – 10:00pm
  • December 27th – 9:00am – 5:00pm
  • December 28th – 30th – 9:00am – 8:00pm
  • December 31st – 9:00am – 6:00pm
  • January 1 – Closed

Care is already busy and we do expect them to continue to be busy after the holidays.  Avoid the wait and activate online!

Thanks!

If you decided to give a kajeet phone as a gift this holiday, we thank you!   Have a happy holiday!

kajeet Family Plan

December 16, 2009

by Carol Politi

How much does it cost to get kajeet for an entire family? Combine the new Parent Plans we are testing with our kid-optimized rate plans and it’s the most affordable solution around.

For example:

1) Family with 3 communicators (e.g., family with a parent and two teens who are all social): ~$80/month

  • Parent uses the kajeet unlimited Talk and Text plan – $49.99 per month
  • Each teen uses our 60 anytime minute/unlimited text plan: $14.99 per month per line

Total? Only ~$80/month for 3 lines for heavy communicators! And the teens can use more minutes for only 10 cents per minute (or they can upgrade to our $19.99 plan and get an additional 90 anytime minutes for just $5 more).

2) Family with 3 light communicators (e.g., a mom with modest usage and two kids that each use 20 minutes and 20 texts per month): ~$36/month

  • Parent uses the kajeet Parent 500 minutes and 100 texts plan: $19.99 per month
  • Each kid uses the kajeet $4.99 Basic Plan (with 10 included minutes). They take advantage of the low 10 cent rate for additional minutes/texts to purchase 10 extra minutes and 20 texts. Each spends only $7.99/month

Total? Only ~$36 per month for 3 lines! Plus, you can change plans at any time – and there are no annual contracts.

Who wants to worry about what cell phone company their friends (or kids’ friends) have? And who wants to be concerned with exactly how many minutes everyone in the family is using at any point in time just to make sure you don’t get hit with expensive overages?

Those days are ending with affordable pay as you go plans. And kajeet allows you to manage them all from a single account. Simple.

What’s the catch? Well, for now this is a test of kajeet Parent Plans, so it is a limited time offer. You must sign up for a Parent Plan before 1/26/10 to take advantage of these plans. If you are a new customer, this means you need to purchase by 1/5/09 in order to get your phone, activate it, and select the plan.

If you want to take advantage of our parent plan options, call care at 1-866-452-5338 to purchase your phone or select your plan.  (If you prefer to purchase online, select “this is a gift” during purchase and call care to activate and get put on these Parent Test plans.)  As always, if things go well with the test we consider making these plans part of our standard rate plan options.

Thoughts? We appreciate your comments and feedback on all our plans.

by Carol Politi

A number of our customers are taking advantage of our new phone selection (and the holiday gifting season) to upgrade their child’s phone (or their own!).   We made this process much easier recently by launching the ability to switch your phone from our website.    This post describes how this is done.

If you are an existing customer and you purchase a new kajeet phone, you can move your number to it (i.e., “switch your phone”) online as follows:

1.  Login to kajeet.com (www.kajeet.com)

2.  Select “switch a phone” from your logged in home page as shown below.

You will then be asked to select the phone you would like to upgrade (in the event you have multiple phones on the account) and for the ESN or MEID of your new phone (this is a unique number that physically identifies a phone – we show you how to find this!).

We know each kajeet customer that purchases a new kajeet phone is making a decision to keep kajeet as their service provider.  We appreciate your business.  I hope our new online phone upgrade feature makes the process of upgrading your phone easier.

Please comment here to let us know if this is easy to use, and how it might be improved.

Thanks!
