Holiday Thoughts and Thanks
December 30, 2009
By Daniel Neal
When we started kajeet a few years ago, we were grateful simply to have the opportunity to pursue our dreams of creating the very best mobile services for kids and their families. We owe many people a great debt for this opportunity. We deeply thank them all.
Now that kajeet has been a reality for just over 2 years, we have many other things to be thankful for: supportive investors, business partners who believe in us, the families who encourage us in our work and, most importantly, our customers.
We can never say it enough: thank you for your business and for placing your confidence in kajeet. You trust us to deliver critical communication services for your children, your families. With 2 children of my own, I know just how precious your trust in us is.
kajeet is a very young company. Many have experienced our exceptional product, rate plans and service. We’ve been recognized for what we’ve achieved. And I’m proud that, with your support, we’ve done so much so fast.
Still, we do make mistakes (and I can’t promise we’ll ever stop!). Providing a cell phone service – particularly one with unique parental controls and location services – is a notoriously complex business. When we do make mistakes, we’re grateful for those who point them out, and who are patient with us as we hustle to fix them.
Yes, we are grateful for every last bit of customer feedback, no matter how small, or how challenging to address. Our dialogue with our customers is precious. It encourages us to make our services better every day, which is the best way to make kajeet grow.
I’m personally grateful to work on a team that puts our customers first, and goes far above and beyond the call of duty to see that our customers are happy. Because your being a part of kajeet makes us happy. Your satisfaction – your happiness – means that our dream of providing the best and safest cell phone services for kids and families is coming true.
So, please continue the dialogue that helps us be better for you, for your family. And thank you for making the kajeet dream come true each day.
We at kajeet wish you and your family a joyous Holiday season, and a happy and healthy New Year.
kajeet Family Plan
December 16, 2009
by Carol Politi
How much does it cost to get kajeet for an entire family? Combine the new Parent Plans we are testing with our kid-optimized rate plans and it’s the most affordable solution around.
For example:
1) Family with 3 communicators (e.g., family with a parent and two teens who are all social): ~$80/month
- Parent uses the kajeet unlimited Talk and Text plan – $49.99 per month
- Each teen uses our 60 anytime minute/unlimited text plan: $14.99 per month per line
Total? Only ~$80/month for 3 lines for heavy communicators! And the teens can use more minutes for only 10 cents per minute (or they can upgrade to our $19.99 plan and get an additional 90 anytime minutes for just $5 more).
2) Family with 3 light communicators (e.g., a mom with modest usage and two kids that each use 20 minutes and 20 texts per month): ~$36/month
- Parent uses the kajeet Parent 500 minutes and 100 texts plan: $19.99 per month
- Each kid uses the kajeet $4.99 Basic Plan (with 10 included minutes). They take advantage of the low 10 cent rate for additional minutes/texts to purchase 10 extra minutes and 20 texts. Each spends only $7.99/month
Total? Only ~$36 per month for 3 lines! Plus, you can change plans at any time – and there are no annual contracts.
Who wants to worry about what cell phone company their friends (or kids’ friends) have? And who wants to be concerned with exactly how many minutes everyone in the family is using at any point in time just to make sure you don’t get hit with expensive overages?
Those days are ending with affordable pay as you go plans. And kajeet allows you to manage them all from a single account. Simple.
What’s the catch? Well, for now this is a test of kajeet Parent Plans, so it is a limited time offer. You must sign up for a Parent Plan before 1/26/10 to take advantage of these plans. If you are a new customer, this means you need to purchase by 1/5/09 in order to get your phone, activate it, and select the plan.
If you want to take advantage of our parent plan options, call care at 1-866-452-5338 to purchase your phone or select your plan. (If you prefer to purchase online, select “this is a gift” during purchase and call care to activate and get put on these Parent Test plans.) As always, if things go well with the test we consider making these plans part of our standard rate plan options.
Thoughts? We appreciate your comments and feedback on all our plans.
Upgrading Your Kajeet Phone?
December 4, 2009
by Carol Politi
A number of our customers are taking advantage of our new phone selection (and the holiday gifting season) to upgrade their child’s phone (or their own!). We made this process much easier recently by launching the ability to switch your phone from our website. This post describes how this is done.
If you are an existing customer and you purchase a new kajeet phone, you can move your number to it (i.e., “switch your phone”) online as follows:
1. Login to kajeet.com (www.kajeet.com)
2. Select “switch a phone” from your logged in home page as shown below.
You will then be asked to select the phone you would like to upgrade (in the event you have multiple phones on the account) and for the ESN or MEID of your new phone (this is a unique number that physically identifies a phone – we show you how to find this!).
We know each kajeet customer that purchases a new kajeet phone is making a decision to keep kajeet as their service provider. We appreciate your business. I hope our new online phone upgrade feature makes the process of upgrading your phone easier.
Please comment here to let us know if this is easy to use, and how it might be improved.
Thanks!

kajeet Mobile Web – New!
November 13, 2009
by Carol Politi
We just launched some great new mobile web services! This new offering provides significantly more flexibility for those that want to surf the web from their kajeet device and gives parents the ability to select the level of access they think works best for their family.
The kajeet Navigator (i.e., the browser on your phone) now has a set of free sites, a set of kid-friendly sites selected by kajeet (these cost money to access), access to social networking and IM (these cost money and are in a separately controlled category), and a category that allows you to access the web freely without controls. The new Feature Manager on kajeet.com allows parents to control the access their kids will have to various sites on the mobile web. Login to kajeet.com and select Configurator/Feature Manager to see the full set of options.

What does it cost?
The web services are charged based on use – $0.35 per 0.25 megabyte (each 0.25MB expires 24 hours after purchase). What that means is that we charge you for 0.25 MB and that this is good for a day. (Some carriers charge in MB, for comparison purposes this equates to $1.40/MB).
What on earth does 0.25 Mbyte get you and why did we take this approach? First, it gets you:
- About 10 mobile-friendly web pages
- About 2-3 full web pages (i.e., non-mobile optimized pages)
Why did we take this approach? It is nice to be able to, for a very small cost, casually browse the web – e.g., look at the weather once in a while. Many of our customers just want a bit of web access and they don’t want to buy a big bundle. (For those that are very heavy users, we will add a bundle option in the future!)
Please note: it is still free to browse our Navigator store for ringtones, games, and applications – and all kajeet users still get access to select free mobileweb sites! Access to your “MyKajeet” is also free.
We would love some input on this – so please comment here on the new features. Your comments will directly reach our product team and they will listen to you! We could specifically use help in the following areas:
1. What sites would you like to see in the “free” category. Our plan is to consistently make available at least 3 sites as part of our base service. These need to be appropriate for kids of all ages. We would appreciate customer feedback to help us decide if we have made the right choices.
2. Do you know of other kid appropriate sites that should be specifically listed and made available in our “Other Great Sites” category? This is a category of sites that again need to be appropriate for kids of all ages. This category is a bit light at the moment and we would like to make it more robust.
Please comment here to let us know what you think, and to let us know how you would like to see these features evolve. Thanks!
Thank you for being our customer!

I love getting notes from kajeet parents and, where they approve, thought I’d start posting some of them here for others to share. Here is a note we received from a recent customer about her experience with kajeet:
“I hope this will get into the right department. I want to thank you for such a wonderful service that you provide. I have seen your ads for a long time, but it appeared that your services were geared more for small children. I responded to a search for unlimited texting, and kajeet came up. I soon discovered that the phones are appealing to kids of all ages, even my fussy teen, and the parental controls are a god send. We have been customers for a little less than a month, but I am so happy with the ease of use, and full protection I am getting. Thank you thank you thank you! I am so happy that my teenage daughter and I can both agree on one phone and service. I have been telling all of my friends about you. Please keep up the good work. You have ended one big point of contention and worry in our house. Thank you again. I hope your company lives long, and prospers. You are doing a very good thing, and you may even save a life, by making them safer.” We received this mail from Rhonda, a kajeet parent.
Thanks for your feedback Rhonda, and thank you for being a kajeet customer. Please continue to tell us when we are doing things right and when we make mistakes. Your feedback helps us to improve our service – and feedback like this makes the entire kajeet team feel great about the work we are doing!
